Our story
The Hotel Tossal d’Altea has been designed by reforming and rehabilitating an old farmhouse that served as an olive oil production mill. This traditional building of local relevance dates from the second half of the 19th century. Originally, it was called «l’armasa de Guillén» as it appears in «Dictionary of Altea and its things» (1983), by Ramón Lloréns Barber, which includes photographs of the mill and the presses, and defines the concepts of «armasa», «safa», «prensa», «colar l’oli», «regló» or «asportims». In reality, the correct name would be “almàssera de Guillem”, as Guillermo Lledó Berdín inherited the estate and the country house in which there was an oil mill, several presses and other necessary artifacts.
In its beginnings, the place was used for the exploitation of vineyards; and then it became an oil mill that was the nerve center of a plantation of olive, carob and almond trees. The presence of the Riu Rau, a place of work and socialization, at the entrance of the building is another architectural element of conservation of our past that is characteristic of the region.
Our ancestors were in charge of the farm and its facilities, and they were dedicated to the production of olive oil in the traditional way. This rural building became a key piece of the agricultural economy of the Altea area. Today they are part of our historical and cultural heritage.
Tradition and culture
Our hotel was conceived to preserve the most representative singularities of the oil mill, with the aspiration of respecting tradition and architectural heritage. Currently, an oil mill equipped with its characteristic conical stone for grinding olives is located in the center of the main hall (Menjador Almàssera); and two restored presses are preserved as symbols of the tools used by our ancestors and other containers of the time to strain the oil, as well as various utensils and tools of the time.
As a tribute to our agricultural origin and as a vindication of the culture of olive oil, the Hotel celebrates an Oil Festival annually. It consists of a gastronomic and cultural day consisting of: tasting and tasting of olive oils; conference by an oil maker; and menu prepared by our Head Chef with oil as the common thread.
Our exciting future project consists of creating a museum collection consisting of a catalog of all the preserved elements of the oil mill so that any visitor, guest or client can learn more about the characteristics of this unique production work.
